Alton's Local List has now been finalised. Although the prime reason for this Local List is to cover those buildings of importance that have not already been statutorily Listed Grades l & ll and the official Conservation Areas, which are already protected, they have been included in this List (suitably differentiated by bold type or yellow highlight) for the sake of completeness in covering Alton's heritage and its setting. [If they were to be omitted, the List would be abbreviated by about 50%.]
This List has been prepared by the voluntary effort of members of the Alton Society over several years* in consultation with the Conservation Officers of the time and it is one of the outcomes of the Alton 2020 plan and Alton's Town Design Statement, both prepared by the Alton Town Partnership.
We trust that this List will be a useful aid to the Planning Officers in flagging up areas and individual buildings for which special attention should be paid to planning applications. It will also provide some guidance to property owners as to the particular significance of their buildings in a way similar to but in more detail than the Town Design Statement. We believe that it represents an example of Localism in action.
We note that, if this List had already been in existence and adopted, then the Treloar Hospital and the Old Maltings in Turk Street might have been preserved.
